Lincoln Street Residents Seek Closure of Vermont Gas Plant

Residents along Lincoln Street urge the Vermont Gas Corp plant on their street be shut down citing odor noise and light from a flare stack as a public nuisance and potential health hazard. Ben-Mont strike ends after 72 days near Bennington

After a 72 day walkout Local 534 of the Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union voted 111 to 68 to accept Ben-Mont Papers best and final two year contract ending Dec 31 1963 A wage rise of 2 percent next Oct 1 plus a 3 to 5 cent fall wage tweak and broader benefits are included The deal avoids a three year term and a 10 cent across the board rise and aims to resume nearly 300 workers including 200 at Ben-Mont and Flint Ink Corp offices and staff The vote was not an official union recommendation and workers were described as tired but supportive The contract draft will be finalized in coming days with signature expected shortly Continued on Page 14.

Orleans Man 39 Killed in Vermont Route 5 Crash

Henry L. Hegg, 39, of Orleans Vermont, died after his car skidded off Route 5, flipped into an embankment and tumbled over. Police said he was tossed from the vehicle and died of a broken neck. He was Vermont's 28th highway fatality of 1961.
