The House approved a bill to mandate that all new television sets receive 82 channels, 70 UHF and 12 VHF, and sent it to the Senate. The 279 to 90 roll call followed a prior voice vote in the chamber.
Bennington voters hear four schooling options costed by the Bennington Southwest School Planning Board to handle rising elementary enrollments. The plan outlines do nothing, go it alone, join a union district with a village elementary, or join a larger union with grade level mergers.
A Bennington Village push to revamp its 118 year old charter prompted a call for a citizen committee to draft a revised charter and recodify village laws. Attorney John H. Williams II urged the move as a remedy for governance limits and outdated provisions, with votes by taxpayers needed for changes.

House Rules Committee lifts block after agreement no 900 million scholarship provision will be accepted in the Senate bill. Rep Howard W. Smith, 79, of Virginia, says he opened talks and set terms for sending the measure to conference.
Sam Bozzi Jr. grabbed a pistol from under his grocery counter and chased a holdup man fleeing with $20. He pulled the trigger three times, but the gun did not fire. The weapon had not been fired since 1922 when his father bought it and placed it under the counter.
Charlotte Peters, 22, of Des Moines mailed surplus food to an elderly Tampa recipient. The beans broke in transit, drawing actions from the Tampa postmaster, Iowa Welfare, and the Agriculture Department. Peters says no fraud intended, but may face temporary suspension from commodity distribution.
After a 10 week walkout Local 534 of the Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union and Ben-Mont reach a new contract through December 31 1963. About 274 hourly workers return this week with a 3 to 5 cent raise Oct 1 and a full union shop plus extended benefits. Village President James B Gibney helped mediate.
Boston College welcomed 4500 students and faculty as poet Robert Frost spoke about America. He quipped that Russia knows how great the United States is, calling him Americas elder statesman of poetry in a quiet, humorous world.
Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov and U.S. astronaut John Glenn Jr meet in Washington for a day of photo opportunities, sightseeing, and speeches at the National Academy of Sciences and other venues. Both plan to address space scientists and visit the White House, Capitol, and Smithsonian during their schedule. Titov predicts future joint lunar flights and praises women's advances in science.
Athens AP reports the U S willing to share control of nuclear warheads in Western Europe with a European union including Britain as defense ministers study weapons and production at NATO talks. Foreign ministers begin a three day review of allied defense positions Friday.
