Milne Says Hiring Policies On Racetrack Outside Dept Jurisdiction

Vermont official Milne told reporters that his department cannot probe contractor or union hiring practices as long as job orders comply with rules. He confirmed Bennington office followed procedure for four job orders by Martin DeMatteo Construction Co. and said no union or nonunion employment condition was required. He urged the National Labor Relations Board to investigate any NLRA violations and noted state agencies have limited reach beyond industrial relations.

Gils Acquire Myers Property Start Building New Factory

The land and buildings at 324 County St. were sold to Mr. and Mrs. David Gil of 122 McCall St. Bennington Potters will resume production within a month after a February 16 fire halted operations. The purchase includes 3% acres, a large grain and feed building, an 85 by 25 foot section for the plant showroom and offices, and several sheds. The Gils plan reconstruction with concrete block and steel framing to expand space and efficiency. Bennington Potters will fill orders while considering future expansion and potential tenant cooperation on the property held by H W Meyer and Son Inc. The sale marks near the Gils' 14th anniversary in Bennington.
