Wind erosion damage rises across Great Plains farmlands
The Soil Conservation Service reports 2,097,437 acres damaged by wind erosion across 182 counties in the Great Plains from November 1 to March 1, up from 919,708 acres a year earlier. Most damage occurs to cropland, with totals by state showing Colorado leading at 1,259,000 acres and other states such as Kansas, Texas, Nebraska, and Montana recording significant figures. Railroads Shaping Steel Market With New Freight Cars
Railroads are expanding heavy steel production as they order and test larger powerful cars. Continental Grain Co moves wheat in 100 ton hopper cars leased from Pullman, with bigger 135 ton hoppers and other oversized designs in trials. Automation and containerized transport push steel use, with containers potentially cutting steel needs by 0.5 million tons by 1970.

DeGaulle's Latin America tour mends his stand against Washington
Roek at Paris UPI President Charles de Gaulle’s Mexico visit signals a tougher line against U.S. policy and a push for independence. He plans a Latin American tour in late 1964 and possible trips to Africa and Asia, raising headaches for Washington. In Boston the Weather Bureau forecasts near normal New England temperatures with light rain. In Vietnam the U.S. faces a reshaped NATO if reformed in 1969, with France seeking greater influence and less American domination.
