UPI reports General Douglas MacArthur aged 84 is progressing as well as expected after a six hour operation to stop internal bleeding. Doctors later performed a tracheostomy to aid breathing and noted his vital signs remain encouraging though he remains unconscious from anesthesia.
Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson told Huntsville crowds the space age lifts the South from a 40 acres and a mule economy and promises a future as bright as the stars. She spoke at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center during a visit to observe Saturn I engine tests and meet workers, praising women’s roles in space effort.
Greek Cypriot sources declined to confirm a rumor that Khrushchev promised military action against Turkey if Ankara intervened in Cyprus. The report, tied to a rightwing weekly citing an unnamed minister, claimed Moscow would defend Cyprus with all means, including support for Cyprus on Turkish soil, though Kremlin notes remained undisclosed.
Violence erupted in Jacksonville Florida as a Negro woman Jonnie Mae Chappell was killed by a shot from a passing car and Billy James was slashed after being tied to a tree. In Atlanta a truck stop clash left no injuries. Police detained 127 rioters during daytime protests.

U S Ambassador Edwin O Reischauer was stabbed in the leg by a 19 year old Japanese man at the Tokyo embassy. He underwent surgery for over two hours and received a blood transfusion after losing considerable blood. Two Americans wrestled the assailant to the floor and held him until police arrived. The suspect, Kowa Shiotani, had been a mental patient in Numazu and had prior arson arrests. Police say he attacked over grievances with the U S postwar occupation policy.
In South Viet Nam a Special Forces sergeant died when he kicked a mine during a mine replacement mission in Quang Duc Province. Another American soldier was wounded after an ambush on a Vietnamese army patrol. Vietnamese officials said two government operations killed 137 Viet Cong.
Bennington posted the highest February unemployment rate in Vermont at 10.1 percent, with about 1,200 unemployed in the community. The rate may drop as Green Mountain Park horse track opens in nearby Pownal.
President Johnson announced a Medicare bill push for the year and outlined a program to accelerate housing, schools, hospitals, highways, and industry construction in the 1960s. He tied these aims to full employment and poverty reduction and urged fighting discrimination as a key step.

Vermont Railway Corp. seeks to lease 37 miles of old Rutland Railway track from Burlington to Albury with a Lake Champlain crossing to New York. President Jay Wulfson said the state would purchase the spur from the defunct Rutland and then lease it. The state authorized 2.7 million dollars in bonding.
U S officials are mystified by the Soviet hold up in returning two Air Force officers shot down in East Germany. Secretary of State Rusk said their release would come soon, but West Berlin waited in vain. Rusk said the move would aid U S Soviet relations and normalizing ties.
