Great grandmother serves as Statehouse postmistress
CORA CHENEY reports from Montpelier on Beatrice Martel of South Hero who runs the Statehouse Post Office during the legislative session. Since 1953 she has been reappointed each session, oversees mail in the cloak room post office, greets school visitors, and has become a local landmark. She has five children, twenty grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, living in a 22 room South Hero farmhouse she renovated. The piece notes her potential claim as the only great grandmother Statehouse postmistress in the United States, possibly the world.
