South Vietnamese paratroopers repelled a three hour NVA assault along a ridgeline in the Central Highlands near Kontum. U.S. helicopter gun ships aided calls for air support as three Soviet tanks and eight trucks were destroyed.
Washington deadline. Sen John Tunney D California and Sen Edmund Muskie D Maine proposed a federal anti noise pollution program including a ban on commercial supersonic aircraft over the United States. The bill would create a 48.5 million three year program and authorize 225 million in grants to state and local agencies along with 26 million for related programs. It would prohibit commercial supersonic flight over U S waters and ban Concorde type operations at U S airports.
A missing Penn Central mail car, loaded with 919 sacks of mail, was found by a pastel inspector in a Birmingham area siding after 25 months. The Postal Service blamed the railroad and vowed dismissals, while Penn Central cited lack of notice from Birmingham Postal authorities. Delivery will start today with apology letters to recipients.
A Sterling Airways Danish charter Caravelle carrying 108 passengers and 6 crew from Colombo to Copenhagen crashed near Dubei in the Persian Gulf killing most aboard. Only unconfirmed reports of a survivor emerged as search teams scoured hilly terrain amid poor weather. Danish and Swedish travelers formed the rest of the 68 Danes, 20 Swedes, 12 Norwegians, four Finns, and two Germans.
Congress approved a 2 billion increase to the national debt limit to 450 billion dollars with a plan to consider another rise in June. The move accompanies a warning to President Nixon that further spending increases require tax reform or loophole closures. House Democrats backed a caucus resolution urging revenue measures, while officials cautioned against expecting a broad tax overhaul.
UPI report says Howard Hughes, the reclusive billionaire and Air Nicaragua owner, met with President Anastasio Somoza in Managua before departing for an unknown destination. Ambassador Shelton said Hughes appeared alert and healthy, with aides remaining to discuss business, including airline interests. Hotel belongings were loaded onto four trucks as he left the International Hotel.
Carole King captures the top three Grammys including record album and song of the year for its Too Late and tapestry while absent in California. Other winners include Aretha Franklin for best R B female performance and Bill Evans Trio for best jazz performance. Leonard Bernstein received a special award and Bing Crosby honors went posthumously to Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson. The ceremony aired from Madison Square Garden with Andy Williams hosting.

In San Jose California Angela Davis told reporters she cannot expect a fair trial in Santa Clara County and accepts the all white jury as their best effort. Eight women and four men including one Mexican American were chosen to hear the case with alternates to be completed. Prosecutor Herts agreed that the people will accept the jury and the trial could begin soon.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy urged President Nixon to pressure Britain to secure a full and fair settlement of the Northern Ireland crisis. He urged the ambassador to convey U.S. concern to Prime Minister Edward Heath and cited historical parallels to 1917. He also sought aid for Bihari Muslims in Bangladesh and support for a Red Cross relief effort.
