Refinery feasibility questioned by Shell executive
Shell Oil vice president Keith Doig told an energy symposium that oil prices would rise after the Arab embargo and building a New England refinery was not feasible for Shell. He warned 1980s import costs could reach 30 to 70 billion dollars, and East Coast refining capacity remains low relative to demand. He predicted rising Arab oil demand and higher prices as Arabs expand refining, while U.S. imports would grow to meet needs. He doubted Nixon energy self sufficiency, and noted future tax changes could raise production costs.
