By Milton Richman up sports writer fort Myers Fla. Up a no matter How Many batting titles he wins nor How Long he keeps playing Ball Roberto Clemente knows some people will always Mark him Down As a chronic complainer. do that automatically because the Pittsburgh outfielder has been beset with a number of ailments which could t be seen on the surface such As a Long standing nervous stomach and a More recent bout with malaria. It bothers Clemente that some of his past troubles were looked upon with a noticeable Trace of scepticism. Quot lots of sportswriters come up and ask me a is there anything wrong with you now a said the pirates 31-year-old batting Champ with special emphasis on the word now. Quot i Tell Mem All to go to hell a Clemente snapped. That answer does nothing to enhance his popularity but Clemente who has racked up three National league batting titles already including a pair in the last two years says he really does no to care. People say i complain a lot and there a always something wrong with me a he said pulling on his baseball stockings before a Grapefruit league game. A Only i can feel my trouble though. They can to. A a in be always had a nervous stomach. The doctors tried to find the reason but they . There have been times i had it real bad. It took a lot out of me. I worried about it and i the pirates were the ones who really worried a year ago this time however when Clemente still was Home in puerto Rico with malaria. He missed most of Spring training Mcaa championship quintet usually lacks superstar College Park my. Up a the thread of a familiar pattern is running through the Mcaa basketball championships Here this weekend. When the finest collegiate team in the land is crowned saturday night at Cole Field House on the University of Maryland Campus amid the usual hysteria one fact is certain a the Quot player of the year will not be on the winning team. The Best College basketball player of 1965 was Michigan a cazzie Russell a and his magnificent three year Star studded career reached a bitter Sweet finale when he and his Wolverine teammates lost to Kentucky 84-77 in the Mideast regional at Iowa City saturday night. The defeat crushed russells fond dream of someday playing on an Mcaa title team. But Russell has one Consolation in his hour of defeat. He a joined a rather exclusive club a one already including such Illus Myca league the Myca basketball league continued its second round of play monday evening with two games. In a close one the crawdads Defeated the 69ers, 64-60, and lobs robbers had an easy time defeating Thebo lets 95-58. The High scorers for each team were Al Mears of crawdads 24scott Racicot 22gregg Croff 23and Gary la flamme 34. Trios names As Bill Bradley Jerry West Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain. They never played on an Mcaa title team either although both West and Chamberlain came within one Point of turning the trick. In fact the pattern of the Mcaa tourney in recent years seems to favor the teams with a balanced Well rounded attack instead of the clubs boasting the erne the last team led by a Quot player of the year selection to go All the Way was the 1956 san Francisco team led by Bill Russell who seems to be an exception to All the patterns. This weekend in the Mcaa finals the top ranked Kentucky team fits the definition Best of the Well balanced unit in the tradition of the Cincinnati and Urcla champions of recent years. Although lacking a first team All America selection coach Adolph rupps team plays As a cohesive unit with a Well disciplined attack. Kentucky could Well be the last stand for the Well balanced Type of team in the next few years. For next year Urcla coach Johnny wooden will finally unveil the Sophomore who a expected to dominate College basketball the next three years a Lew Alcindor. Most College basketball followers seemed convinced hell Lead the Bruins to at least one Crown the next three years a of not three. But then who would have believed that players like Wilt Chamberlain Oscar Robertson and cazzie Russell would never play on an Mcaa title team Alcindor will be bucking a lot of tradition. Eisenman stresses the fact in All his classes that there is to be no one on the tramp unless he and four spotters Are present. This Rule is strictly enforced. The Junior High classes Are learning such stunts As knee drops seat drops and front drops. Some of the boys More advanced in this skill Are learning How to do knee flips Forward and backward flips. The senior High students Are almost professionals on the trampoline. Most of the boys have had at least two years of experience and most of the mandatory Maneu vers or stunts Are quite easy for them. Clemente shrugs his shoulders when you ask him about his chances for a third consecutive batting championship however. Quot i never think about that before the season a he said carefully Curling the tops of his thin Whites Over his stockings. Quot toward the end of the year i Start thinking about it. Not Clemente starting his 12th season with Pittsburgh and owning a .309 lifetime batting average claims the More he plays the More tired he gets. He is not alone there although when the going gets toughest along about september you can generally depend upon him to keep going with his Bat when most of the others begin faltering. Quot i did it last year by just meeting the Ball a he said. Quot i did no to swing hard at All. I think in a going to do the same thing this year. We have two Good hitters behind me now and i done to have to swing so he Means Don Clendenon and Willie Stargell. The two hit a total of 41 homers to clementes to last year. Quot they always say we need someone to hit Home runs a said Clemente. Quot we got some Guys who can nowt i Don t care for Home runs. I showed pm i could do it when i hit 23 in 1961. Home runs Arentt that important though. Not to me Roberto Clemente is an unusual fellow. They pay him better than $65,000 a year although he averages Only to homers a season. Good pitching never bothers him much. The Only thing that does Are the people who think he s a complainer. Botox 0-5 in Grapefruit Competition Winter Haven Fla. Up a Man for Man the baseball experts contend the Cincinnati reds have the Best club in the National league. Cincinnati a new manager Don Heffner agrees with them. Quot i Trade our starting eight regulars for the starters of any other club in the league a Heffner says of the reds. Quot we have the Power the defense the Speed and More pitching depth than any team in the league. Quot we Are solid in every department. That a Why i think Well the reds who finished a disappointing fourth last year after being in the thick of Contention until the final week of the season made one major change for 1966. They sent Frank Robinson one of the game s outstanding outfielders to the Baltimore orioles for pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun. Quot we made the Deal a Heffner explained Quot because we needed pitching. We led the league in hitting and Fielding last year so it was Plain that pitching was our they also made the Deal to make room on the team for Rookie Tommy Helms one of the most sought after players in the majors. Helms hit .319 at san Diego last season and .381 in 21 games for the reds. Helms will take Over at second base with Pete Rose the All Star second baseman last year who hit .312, shifting to third. Deron Johnson the regular third baseman last year who led the league in runs batted in with 130, will take Over for Robinson in the Outfield. Johnson however will be stationed in left with Tommy Harper who started to Blossom in 1965 with 18 Home runs and 65 a big a shifting to right. Vada Pinson the Speed merchant who hit .305 with 22 hrs and 94 a big a will be Back in Center. Gordy Coleman against right handed pitching and Tony Perez against Southpaw hurling will platoon at first base. Between them they hit 26 Home runs and batted in 104 runs. Leo Cardenas who hit .287, will be Back at Short. Heffner May platoon John Edwards and Don Pavletich behind the plate. Edwards a left handed hitter is the better receiver but Pavletich a righty swinger has More Power. Pavletich hit .319 last season against .267 for Edwards. Chico Ruiz will be a Reserve infielder with Art Shamsky Marty Keough Dick Simpson Mel Queen and Charley James bidding for the three Outfield Utility spots. Heffner has a wealth of starting Pitcher material. The Only three sure of being in the starting rotation Are Sam Ellis the Ace of the staff last year with 22 victories Jim Maloney a 20 game Winner and Pappas who was 13-9 at Baltimore. Ellis lost to games Maloney nine. Jim o Toole who won Only three games last year after a 17-7 record in 1964 Joey Jay 9-8joe Nuxhall 11-4 John Tsitouris 6-9 and Bill Mccool who compiled a 9-10 record in Relief Are the other possible starters.
