Senate debate over horse track tax shifts funds to education
The plan would guarantee 4.1 million dollars for education over two years by adjusting the total take from harness and flat racing. The measure, written by the Ways and Means Committee with Gov Hoff's backing, aims to ease the track's financial strain and change the 1959 10-8 split. The Senate planned to reconvene Tuesday amid civil rights clashes in Selma.

Aiken objects to proposed cuts in soil conservation funds
Sen. George D. Aiken warns that a $20 million reduction in Soil Conservation Service funds would halve available technical services in Vermont. He cites impacts on 11,350 district cooperators and 4,000 yearly service recipients, risking reduced practices and a weakened ACP program. He cites a revolving fund plan but says local sources would be unlikely to cover the shortfall.
