Selma March Suppressed by Troopers After Tear Gas

In Selma Alabama state troopers and deputies halted a freedom march to the capitol. Under Gov George Wallace orders 600 Negroes were tear gassed and beaten with clubs bull whips and ropes. At least 67 were injured including John Lewis with a possible skull fracture. Two hospitals reported 17 hospitalized with broken limbs head injuries and other trauma. About 50 more treated for lesser injuries and released.

Marines Land in Vietnam 80 Miles From North

About 1,400 U S Marines landed at Da Nang airbase 80 miles from North Vietnam marking the first combat landings since Korea. The operation raises U S troop levels in South Vietnam to 27,000 as Buddhist leaders in Saigon urge U S withdrawal and a halt to bombing in the north.

Supreme Court to Rule on Virginia Poll Tax Law

The Supreme Court agreed to review Virginia’s poll tax requirement for voting in state or local elections. A federal court in Alexandria upheld the policy on November 10, 1964. Other states Alabama Mississippi Louisiana and Texas also use poll taxes, while Vermont local elections require payment and a bill to lift it passed the Vermont Senate.

Montpelier High School English teacher Edward Seaver seeks a public hearing after being told his contract will not be renewed in June.
