Lottery Bills Killed In Massachusetts House
In Boston the Massachusetts House defeated seven bills to create a sweepstakes lottery aimed at raising funds to augment a $180 million sales tax package. The bills faced adverse committee reports before Thursday's debate. Rep. George O'Farrell urged substituting his bill for the report, citing rising lottery popularity, while opponents argued the plan would hurt those least able to pay. The House rejected the substitution by 113 to 90, and the adverse report was adopted, killing the measures. Rep. Thomas McGee defended the idea, citing cross-border purchases by residents, while Rep. Gerald Lombard called it a cruel hoax. Additional supporters included Rep. J. Louis LeBlanc and Rep. John Janas. A later attempt to substitute Shinberg's bill was defeated 117 to 88.
