Mold Rot Threatens Berries in Vermont Farms

Vermont strawberry growers face gray mold rot from recent humid and showery weather. Projected by AVM Extension plant pathologist Kenneth Fisher, the fungus attacks blossoms and young berries, thrives in wet conditions, and spreads rapidly. Cultural practices to reduce moisture, proper spacing, weed control, and dry periods for spraying are advised. Captan is the approved harvest fungicide, applied only during dry periods. Strawberries should be refrigerated after picking regardless of spray.

Extension Agent John C. Page notes peak bong season with high temperatures and moisture boosting insect survival. He warns elm leaf beetles may invade homes, white worms turn out to be leeches after rain, and alfalfa weevil may shift to ladino clover. Rose chafer and Japanese beetle outbreaks have declined with milky spore use, but insect pressure remains present. focus on early control rather than constant spraying.
