Salem Defeats Taylor as Bennington elects three to board

In Bennington Vermont 2000 registered voters turned out at Bennington Elementary. Dr Charles G Salem won the Mt Anthony Union School Board seat with 1266 votes to 734 for Marian C Taylor. Louis J Perrotta and Bernard J Bellemare also won three year terms with 1599 and 1054 votes respectively.

Bennington School District approves 5.83 tax rate and 1.706 million budget

At the Bennington School District annual meeting about 200 voters approved a 5.83 tax rate and a net budget of 1,706,828 for 1967 68. The package includes 1,211,697 for Mt Anthony Union and a 2,000 floor article to repave playgrounds at Molly Stark and Bennington Elementary schools.

Castle Defeats Dr. Burnham In Shaftsbury Union Board Contest

In Shaftsbury last night voters chose William Castle over Dr. William H. Burnham for the Mt. Anthony Union Board by 123 to 87 as the Shafts bury School meeting drew the largest crowd in memory. Jesse Strong defeated Ralph Prouty 99 to 67 for a three year local board term.

U.S.-Soviet nuclear accord edging toward treaty

UPI reports Secretary of State Rusk expressed optimism that a nearly complete treaty to ban nuclear weapons spread could be presented at the Geneva Disarmament Conference. A draft with safeguards left blank was contemplated as Washington and Moscow work out final wording with Foster and Roshchin in Geneva.

Mrs. H P McCullough Dies Bennington College Founder

Mrs Hall Park McCullough widow of a prominent Vermont resident and founder of Bennington College died at Hall Farm after a brief illness aged 86. Born Edith van Benthuysen in Yonkers she helped establish a life of civic service including Bethlehem Day Nursery the United Negro College Fund Womens Committee and the Hoosac School board. She joined Bennington College in its early years served as first chair of trustees and earned an honorary doctor of laws in 1956.

Police Restore Order In Buffalo East Side Turmoil

About 400 helmeted officers moved into Buffalo East Side after a night of shooting looting vandalism and arson. Police faced sniper fire but reported no hits. Tear gas drove back gangs as 19 people were arrested and four officers were lightly injured.
