Zoning change sought to aid McDonalds in Manchester

Planning commission hears proposed zoning changes to widen a Route 7 commercial strip for a McDonalds outlet. Opponents advertise at Manchester Journal urging residents to attend 7:30 p.m. meeting at Manchester Elementary School cafeteria. The plan would shift land behind the strip to commercial, with a mandatory 25 foot buffer and potential landscaping, amid claims of traffic, esthetic impact, and loss of residential access.

The hike stems from a 5 percent rise in funding to Mt Anthony Union High School while delinquent tax collection has surged to over 37,000 this year from 7,000 last year. Road work dominated the meeting with praise for Byron Towslee for fixes on Mann Hill Road and concerns over two foot deep ditch culverts on Carpenter Hill that could collect snow.

Wise political move buys 4000 Patriot papers in Southbridge

In Southbridge Massachusetts readers found four pages missing from the Patriot as a campaign tactic during a local election. One side bought 4000 copies, removed a four page ad for the opposition, and distributed the papers as a gift to voters. The action aimed to influence a decision on keeping the town manager form of government vs a town meeting with a selectboard. Patriot owner Ity O'Donnell called it a likely wise political move.
