The Supreme Court ruled that state corrections officials may bar inmate organizations from bulk mailings, soliciting members, or meetings inside prison. A six man majority said prisons are not public forums and that associational rights for prisoners are limited to aid penal management and safety.

Korean official links bribery to influence US congressmen
Former South Korean KCIA chief Kim Hyung Wook testified before a House subcommittee that the agency helped bankroll a bribery operation to sway U.S. lawmakers. He named former Representatives Cornelius Gallagher and Richard Hanna as involved, and said Park Chung Hee ordered the activities to secure more military aid, with Tongsun Park as the key Washington figure. Kim claimed Park pocketed much of the funds and burned a list of 15 to 20 targeted congressmen. He also said Park reported two close Congress friends would assist in modernizing Korea’s armed forces in return for Seoul’s help.

Akron sewer blasts after vandals dump naphtha at plant
A series of explosions ripped through Akron streets after vandals dumped 300 gallons of naphtha at Patch Rubber Co. The blast crater measured 8 to 9 feet, a water and gas main were broken, and a nearby area including Glendale cemetery faced evacuation. No injuries were reported.

Brant death ruled accident by jury
Burlington once and defended by a grand jury cleared the June 7 shooting death of escaped convict Donald Brant as an accident. A police shotgun blast killed Brant as officers attempted to remove him from beneath a pool deck. a state trooper was wounded in the hand but not seriously hurt.
