Burger urges law to admit illegally seized evidence
Washington reports that House Judiciary Committee chair Emmanuel Celler opposes Chief Justice Burger’s call for a statute permitting use of evidence obtained by illegal police searches. Burger proposed adding a quasi judicial panel to hear damages while allowing such evidence. Celler and the panel would scrutinize any such law, favoring the 1914 Fourth Amendment rule that bars illegally obtained evidence.
