Pollution closes public swimming area at Lake Raponda
Wilmington health officials shut Lake Raponda’s public swimming area after Memorial Day water tests showed bacteria levels more than twice the safe limit. The town and state will test septic systems for about 100 homes around the three mile lake, dye tests to trace discharge, and enforce a June 1 permit requirement for polluters under state law, with fines possible after July 1.

Vermont leaders warn of future shock if growth not planned
Elbert G. Moulton and L. Douglas Meredith told the Vermont Bankers Association that rapid growth and technological advances threaten to outpace housing, jobs, and infrastructure. They urged even statewide planning through 2000, expanded sewer capacity, and removal of interest-rate limits to attract capital and keep Vermonters from leaving.
