Vermont Yankee GE settle faulty nuclear fuel case
Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp and General Electric Co reached an out of court settlement over defective fuel installed at the 540,000 kilowatt Vernon plant in 1972. The deal, after two years of talks, drops fuel costs by about 6.8 million while totaling about 21 million to replace the faulty fuel. President James E. Griffin noted the settlement benefits customers and said he discussed terms with Gov. Thomas Salmon before signing.

About 20 members of a Vermont union refused to cross the line after lunch, with the rest set to join after their shift. The plant, a 540,000 kilowatt facility and Vermont's only atomic plant, faced an eight month outage possibility after a $120,000 transformer burned out and shut down operations. Vermont Yankee officials quickly sought a replacement, locating a transformer in Westboro, Massachusetts, from the New England Power Co. The move comes amid a two month old strike by the United Brotherhood of Electrical Workers targeting the Massachusetts supplier.
