Vermont Yankee faces transformer outage and picket disruption
In Vernon Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp endured a four day sequence of trouble starting with a $120 000 transformer failure that shut the plant on Wednesday. Picket lines from Local 486 IBEW Worcester crossed from Massachusetts prompting Vermont Yankee workers to halt crossing them. A Vermont court issued an injunction ordering picketers to disperse with a hearing slated for June 23. The plant faces 540 000 kilowatts of lost power costing about 248 000 daily in replacement energy. Separately Vermont Yankee and General Electric reached an out of court settlement over defective nuclear fuel installed in the 217 million plant expected to reduce fuel costs by about 6.8 million though consumer power costs will still reflect overall expenses. Governor Salmon administration officials were kept informed during negotiations.
