Melbourne Evans collision leaves 74 sailors dead
Preliminary UPI reports say the Australian carrier Melbourne and the U S destroyer Evans were darkened and in zigzag maneuvers when they collided 350 miles south of Saigon during a Southeast Asia drill. Evans allegedly failed to complete a turn after orders, causing a bow to bow impact in bright moonlight. A joint inquiry in Subic Bay will determine fault as survivors are processed in Singapore and Subic Bay.
