Area youngsters learn under federal programs in Bennington
Three federally aided summer programs operate in the Bennington area. Operation Head Start serves nearly 70 preschoolers from low income families at Bennington Elementary School, funded through the Bennington Rutland Economic Opportunity Council. A Title I remedial program serves Grades 1 through 8 with reading and math help, enrolling over 140 students from public and parochial schools, ending August 5. Nine-area teens are in summer jobs via Neighborhood Youth Corps, earning $1.25 an hour for 30 hours per week, with placements in public or nonprofit agencies.
