House committee passes $5.7 billion school aid plan
The House Education and Labor Committee approved a $5.7 billion two year federal aid program for grade and high schools. It would extend the 1965 elementary secondary school aid law and the impacted areas program. The measure authorizes $2.2 billion in the first year and $3.5 billion in the next. An appropriations bill is needed for funds. The plan trails a Senate subcommittee version by about 3.1 billion for the first year but exceeds President Johnson's request by roughly 400 million.
