Water Project Approved For Bennington Vermont Town

The Town of Bennington secures federal aid for a water system expansion with 188 500 reserved by HUD, covering half of construction costs. The project totals 453 000, with the remainder to be raised by a future bond, and includes a diversion dam, a 500 000 gallon settling basin, and a 3.5 mile pipeline to connect to the current system.

North Viet protests Ky invasion call and ICC protest

North Viet Nam formally protested to the International Control Commission over South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky's invasion talk and charged U S planes bombed the demilitarized zone. Hanoi also claimed U S spraying of toxic chemicals, heavy losses for allies, and another U S aircraft shot down in Quang Binh Province. The protest urged ICC attention to U S imperialist plans and Saigon agents breaching the Geneva accords.

Curiosity Saves Life Of Escaped Prisoner

Lt Col Eugene P Deatrick III spotted a wave and an SOS on rocks while flying over a remote North Viet Nam valley. He helped rescue Navy Lt Dieter Dengler, the only American prisoner to escape North Viet Nam, after Dengler hid by day and traveled by night toward freedom with Air Force pilot support. A second escapee was executed. Dengler reached a rendezvous with Deatrick and helicopter rescue followed.

Wilson Flies To Washington For U S Viet Nam Policy

Fayette Pled Innocent To Influence Peddling Indictments

Two Vermont men face federal charges after pleas of not guilty were entered in Brattleboro. Sen. Frederick J. Fayette and Frederick A. Flint appeared before U.S. District Judge Ernest W. Gibson with cases bound for Montpelier. The indictments concern a 1963 St. Johnsbury postmastership contest in which payments and influence were allegedly exchanged for an appointive office. The 1963 Handley case and political ties to the St. Johnsbury Democratic Party figure Ned Handy are cited in the document. The term opens September 12 in Montpelier.

Three legislators announce candidacies for re election

Three Bennington Woodford area state legislators announced they will seek reelection to the Vermont House this fall. Democrat George Van Santvoord of Shadowbrook Road District 3-3 South and Republicans Everett S. Lillie of South Stream Road and Daisy L. Myers of Woodford District 3-2 joined others in signaling bids. Van Santvoord, 75, a former state senator and long-time educator, urged annual salaries for legislators and studied certification of educational institutions while noting farmers' needs as farms decline. Myers has served in the House since 1959 and is active in state education governance.

Nassau Accident Recalls Berlin Explosion four years later

Nassau residents feared a repeat of the Berlin catastrophe when a propane gas truck overturned on U S 20 in Nassau on Monday. The driver and bystander stopped to aid a burning vehicle, the fuel tank punctured but no propane spilled. Fire crews from Nassau Schodack Valley and Nassau Rescue Squad assisted as tow trucks attempted to right the overturned truck and traffic was diverted for safety.
