Judge strikes alimony duty for bankrupt husbands

Federal bankruptcy judge Arthur N. Votolato Jr ruled that a section of the Bankruptcy Act imposes no due process requirement to continue alimony from bankrupt husbands. In Schiffman v Wasserman, the former husband Allan Wasserman was not required to pay $5,900 in back alimony after declaring bankruptcy a year earlier. The decision, backed by the American Civil Union, frames alimony as a neutral term not tied to gender.
