Phoenix rise of radical magazine owner on a Whately farm

Jim Cooney, 69, a former failed farmer and lifelong dissenter, runs Morning Star Farm in West Whately and publishes The Phoenix, a radical literary quarterly begun in 1938. The magazine, printed on site and mailed to about 2,800 subscribers, is the country’s sole radical literary journal. Cooney, who has faced bankruptcy and wartime draft resistance, says the Phoenix survives on outside work and prints unknown writers who may shape literature, while he rails against government and taxes and notes FBI scrutiny since 1941.

Williams designs energy efficient music building at Williams College

Ground was broken for Phase II of a three part expansion at Williams College. The $2.6 million two story building will be highly insulated and double glazed with solar heating for hot water and reheat coils. It houses classrooms, offices, a choral room and a 260 seat chamber hall. Architects Cambridge Seven Associates designed an acid etched concrete exterior to resemble limestone and a courtyard between Chapin Hall and the new structure.
