Deane Davis Urges Fiscal Reform to Cut Property Taxes
In a Rotary Club address Vermont gubernatorial hopeful Deane C. Davis urged higher state aid to education to reduce property taxes and warned inflation erodes citizen welfare. He proposed a 40 percent state share of district costs, a revised aid formula favoring towns with fewer students, and new revenue sources if needed, while opposing a sales tax. He labeled Vermont the highest taxed state, called for restraint in spending, and outlined three inflation halt measures focused on federal deficit cuts, strict state accounting, and debt discipline.
