During a 34 hour session the Bennington School District board debated sponsoring Prospect School, canceled administrative Diner's Club Cards, and questioned the need for a director of special education amid tense proceedings.
Vermont State Police issued an all regions alarm for Cleo C. Webb Jr. after a 10:30 a.m. jail escape from Bennington County jail. Webb, 24, from Shaftsbury, is wanted on charges including malicious destruction of property and driving with a suspended license. Bars pushed out of a jail window were cited as the escape method. Authorities describe Webb as a white male 5 feet 9 inches, 130 pounds, with green eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion, and possible beard. Call Shafts bury state police with tips.
President Johnson and Secretary of State Rusk fly to Hawaii for a two day meeting with South Vietnam’s President Thieu. Officials say no urgent military or political questions require a summit now, but discussions will cover Paris negotiations and continued U S support for Saigon.
In the St. Albans section of Queens a two story gray stucco house housing four families burned in the early morning. Nine children and two adults died. 16 residents were living there though zoned for one family. Fire officials reported a false alarm delayed units and a suspect was arrested. Fire started in a first floor kitchen. firefighters battled the blaze for 30 minutes. Darlene Black and Sheila Black among the dead. other victims included Sheila Gibson and Bertha Gibson.

Vermont legislator Joseph J. Caracciola announced his bid for a fourth term in Bennington District 3-1. He will seek the Republican nomination in September, facing incumbent David J. Allen and challenger Leon E. Wagner in a three-way primary. Prague reports say Czech Communist leaders, led by Alexander Dubcek, refused Soviet pressure to roll back reforms toward more democracy. They warned a return to Stalinist methods would provoke resistance from party members and society, while pledging loyalty to the Soviet bloc. Brezhnev reportedly sought a face to face with Dubcek, who offered Kosice as meeting site but was rejected.
