Local 18 Leader Seeks Future With Different Union
Robert Pillsbury, president of Local 18 IBTW, said 289 of 366 ballots favor affiliating with the Communications Workers of America AFL CIO amid a 15 month IBTW contract. He cited financial strain from a prolonged strike affecting 13,500 workers across five New England states and criticized current leadership for bargaining tactics. Local 18 members have not received strike benefits and the group has cut funds and sold stock to cover costs. Pill sbury noted other unions offered help but did not specify. The union began striking April 26 over wages and a promotions tweak, and a six mediator panel's back to work proposal was accepted by both sides but its interpretation remains disputed.
