Metzenbaum seated in Senate despite tax dispute
In a packed Senate chamber Howard M. Metzenbaum, Cleveland financier, was seated after an hour and a half of debate on whether to investigate his $118,102 IRS tax dispute. The vote favored seating without investigation, aided by support from Senators Ervin and Curtis and with Vice President Ford swearing him in. Metzenbaum’s appointment shifts the Chamber toward a slightly more liberal balance, as Saxbe’s prior alignments against administration measures will be reshaped by his presence.
