American civilian missing after Chinese seizure of Paracel Islands
UPI reports the United States will use every effort to locate Gerald Emil Kosh, a civilian aboard a South Vietnamese vessel at Paracel Island, where Chinese air, sea, and ground forces overran the archipelago. Dutch tanker rescues 23 survivors from the same incident. Saigon records 13 dead, 37 wounded, 209 missing, as Kosh remains unaccounted for.

Truck stop buried by snow survivor found after slide near Terrace
A hillside avalanche buried the Northroute truck stop 40 feet deep 28 miles west of Terrace. RCMP say up to 15 may have been inside. four bodies and one survivor retrieved. Survivor Volkmar Zobel, 30, rescued from beneath 10 feet of snow, told police he saw five or six people in the coffee shop before the slide. Names identified include Allan MacDonald, Steven Mintenko, Donald Laginodiere, and Theodore Armstrong. About 100 rescuers worked overnight with dogs and floodlights.
