Farmers Seek Tax Relief At VNRC Meeting Halifax Cows
Vermont Natural Resources Council heard Halifax farmers plea for state tax relief to keep farms viable. They argued high tax bases push cows to eat five times as much hay for five times the milk, risking rural Vermont if farmers sell. VNRC noted bills to restore revenue with a per acre base and town aid, while others urged valuation reform and land-use planning.

Unemployment in the Bennington area fell about 24 percent from 1968. Total weeks of unemployment reached 9,100, with monthly rates peaking in February at 1,488 and dipping to 161 in September. Average insured unemployment was 2.2 percent, below 3.0 percent in 1968 and under the statewide 2.3 percent. Benefit payments totaled $300,633, a 22.2 percent drop from 1968.

In Vermont the week ending Jan 17 saw about 5,000 jobless, yielding a 4 percent rate, down 191 from the prior week as unemployment claims fell in seven of 11 offices.
