Shaftsbury WSCS Discusses American Indians' Plight
The January meeting of the Shaftsbury Women's Society of Christian Service at the First United Methodist Church featured a program based on Peter Farb's The American Indian: A Portrait in Limbo. Members distributed the booklet, read excerpts, and discussed Indian housing, unemployment, life expectancy, education, and federal policies, calling for Indian self-determination on reservations. The group voted to support the Navajo Mission School, liquidate 1969 apportionments, and contribute to the pastor's salary, with banners planned for district and national assemblies. A chicken pie supper was announced for February 7, and future meetings include a talk by Dr. Curtis M. Flory on cancer prevention.
