Cold snap grips Vermont with record-foreshadowed chill
The U S Weather Bureau in Burlington reports an arctic air mass settling over Vermont bringing subzero readings of 24 below in Newport 21 below in Montpelier and St Johnsbury and possible further record lows. The cold spell continues through the week with forecasts of minus 15 to minus 25 in parts of the state and the February record may be broken. Burlington had an average 1.8 degrees in the first 18 days of January.

Huge Drug Cache Seized In Rensselaer County
NASSAU NY dn a raid on a garage Saturday night in this Rensselaer County village the narcotics squad of the State Police seized more than 500 000 worth drugs in what was described among the largest seizure of its type ever made in the state. 213 cartons of barbiturates amphenetimines tranquilizers pep pills and other drugs were confiscated about half could have been sold on the black market for about 250 000. The former owner was not named but the garage once belonged to a pharmaceutical salesman who died in 1966. The present owner is believed unaware of the stockpile and its value. Local youths are thought to have pilfered and used portions. After a full inventory troopers will destroy the contents which could satisfy thousands of addicts for weeks.
