Price-Fix Probe Of Drugs in Vermont Law Debate

Vermont Legal Aid Director Richard Blum urged a probe into possible price fixing by the State Board of Pharmacy during a joint House Senate hearing on a bill to legalize mail order drugs banned by the board two years ago. Attorney General James M. Jeffords upheld the ruling but warned any state board should not shield its own interests. The dispute followed a BROC challenge to allow a mail order drug program for seniors, which could save 20 to 50 percent versus local prices. Blum said the Office of Economic Opportunity was investigating the board’s public versus vested interests with claims of pressure against drug discounts. He cited board rulings prohibiting drug sales and discount advertising as evidence. Rep. Harvey Carter renewed a bill to strip the board of its drug regulation powers.
