Hoff backs state purchase of Velco power firm in study panel debate
Former governor Hoff tells House Commerce Committee he favors a bill to have the state take over Velco the Vermont Electric Co. He argues planning is vital during and after the energy crisis and that Velco should be the focus for state electricity planning. He supports NEPOOL and warns Velco could not leave the grid while Velco is controlled by CVPS and decisions are made within NEPOOL. The Hoff commission proposed a Velco board with governor appointees and representatives from municipal utilities cooperatives and private power firms but Velco CVPS and Vermont Yankee president James Griffin declined endorsement.

Union Petroleum Cuts No 2 Heating Oil Price
Union Petroleum Corp reduced its wholesale No 2 heating oil by 6.16 cents per gallon with immediate effect. If retailers pass the cut to consumers, homeowners could save about 1.5 million dollars this month across the six New England states. The firm sells to roughly 1,000 independent retailers and cited abundant lower priced oil arrivals as the reason for the slash after rapid price hikes in late 1973.
