Gas Tax Hike Key to Vermont Road Projects
Vermont highway commissioner Lauritz Larsen said a two cent gas tax hike is needed for new Bennington County roads before 1980, with a one cent rise to fund U.S.4 from Rutland west to the New York line and the Burlington beltline. The governor plans a one cent increase, bringing the total to 8.5 cents per gallon the highest in New England.

Flyers land on thin ice and plane sinks at Hedges Lake
Kenneth Rich and John Sherrin, both pilots, attempted a two point landing on Hedges Lake using a light plane owned by the Cambridge Flying Club. The ice proved too thin with a blowhole, causing the skis to sink and the wings to rest near 50 feet of water.
