Czech Reds Oust Novotny as Leader

Vienna UPI reports Antonin Novotny was fired as Czech Communist chief but remains Czechoslovakia’s president. Alexander Dubcek was named new party leader, with CTK noting Novotny’s resignation followed faction wrangling in the Czech politburo amid reforms and economic strain. Slovak members pushed for his ouster.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Dr Spock and Protesters

Dr Benjamin Spock the pediatrician and four other Vietnam war opponents were indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for taking part in a nationwide conspiracy to resist the draft. Gen Lewis B Hershey praised the Justice Department calling it a marvelous job and a time for exhaltation.

Hoff Interviewed on ETV Program From Vermont Statehouse

Governor Philip Hoff sat for a taped 30 minute program with journalists Vic Maerki and Stephen Terry at the statehouse. He discussed public housing, education, finances and highways, endorsing a state public housing authority and regionalized schools. U S Presents Israel Bill For USS Liberty Deaths

The United States has sent Israel a 3.3 million dollar claim for death benefits of 34 American sailors killed when Israeli planes strafed the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967. The State Department said Israel apologized and promised compensation, with further claims for repairs, medical aid, lost services, and wounded casualties.

Air Academy cadet faces court martial for robbery and forgery

Air Force Academy cadet Paul David Speass, 21, of Tucson, was charged with robbery forgery and larceny marking the academy’s first court martial in 13 years. Deep Haiphong raids and air losses in Vietnam

The Friday briefing noted targets on Thursday struck two bridges near Haiphong and a railroad span eight miles from Communist China in a deep penetration. A Navy F8 Crusader was shot down over Haiphong on Thursday, with two planes reported lost Wednesday over North Vietnam, including an F104 Thunderchief downed by a MiG 21 over Hanoi and an A4 Skyhawk lost to unknown causes.

Sihanouk declines intermediary role in US Cambodia talks
