Medicare Plan How It Works Who Pays
President Johnson’s health program for the elderly seems assured this year. If you are 65 by July 1, 1966 and need hospital care, the federal government would pay part of the bill after a one day deductible about $40. It would cover hospital costs up to 60 days plus 30 days of outpatient service and home health care with 240 visits a year. Post hospital extended care up to 60 days begins Jan 1, 1967. Financing comes from a Social Security hospitalization tax starting 0.3 percent rising to 0.45 percent by 1969, with employer matching, on earnings up to $5,600. Those not under Social Security would have the federal government pay the hospital costs. Taxpayers subsidize two million elderly under the plan.
