Blocking blamed as top grid injury factor
Dr. Donald L. Cooper told the NCAA convention that blocking rules, not artificial turf, largely drive football knee and leg injuries. He urged limiting downfield blocking to above the belt on punt, kickoff, and pass interception plays to curb severe injuries. A joint NCAA study supported that turf differences are not a major factor. Illinois State University received one year of probation from the NCAA Council for violations in financial aid recruiting and academic eligibility.
