Vermont highway deaths fall to 127 for 1974

Vermont recorded 127 highway fatalities in 1974, an 18 percent drop from 1973’s 155, the Department of Motor Vehicles reported. The decline follows a lower speed limit and a gas crisis, though deaths rose in the last two months of 1974. The year’s first fatality occurred New Year’s Day in Mendon, a head-on crash on Route 4 killing 20 year old William D. Troxler Jr. of North Carolina. In Bennington County 1974 saw 12 highway deaths, including two double fatalities.
