Desegregation dispute keeps South Boston High in limbo
In Boston, South Boston High remains closed amid a desegregation fight. UPI reports Judge Garrity refused permanent closure but allowed continued school closures for safety. Superintendent Leary urged caution, citing police safety guarantees and ongoing bids to relocate students if needed. The judge demanded sworn depositions from police officials supporting the closure and stressed it would be a last resort to shut the complex permanently.

Justice Douglas Not Near Death After Stroke
UPI reports Justice William C. Douglas, 76, suffered a fall and weakness while in Nassau with his wife. Doctors say his mind remains clear and his condition is serious but not life threatening, with a pacemaker and anticoagulants to prevent clots. He slept comfortably at Walter Reed and is alert, conserving strength for tests. President Ford arranged transport home from Nassau. Douglas grew up in Yakima and, despite disagreements with Chief Justice Burger, remains close to him and continues on the court with a rapid pace.

McIntyre Attacks Thomson Over Wyman Senate Choice
Senator Thomas McIntyre charges Governor Meldrim Thomson breached faith by appointing Louis Wyman to fill the late Norris Cotton's Senate term. McIntyre argues Cotton was promised no appointment to benefit pension rules, and that Wyman gains only staff space and parking, not seniority. He cites Senate certification records and supports Durkin in the recount.
