New Catholic Calendar Removes Many Popular Saints
Vatican reform of the Roman Catholic universal calendar took effect on New Year’s Day, removing saints such as Christopher, Nicholas, Valentine, George, and Barbara from mandatory feast observances. Saints remain in the official martyrology, with optional veneration by local churches and nations. Pope Paul VI said the change shifts worship toward the Resurrection and redemption, reducing feasts from over 150 to 63 mandatory mentions annually.
