NEA says federal lunch program sustains segregation

NEA president George D. Fischer and reporter Nick Kotz argue in Today's Education that the federal lunch program was designed to serve farm surpluses, not hungry children, leaving at least 5 million disadvantaged youths unfed at school. They call for universal hot lunches and school choice protections, noting political resistance but some legislative hope with Sen. Talmadge's bill.

Vermont Legal Aid challenges welfare lien statute

The Social Welfare Board will hear a Bennington County appeal of the practice, which allows the state to recover part or all of the aid given. Acting Social Welfare Commissioner Paul Philbrook called the law inequitable and said it deterred some elderly eligible residents from seeking aid.
