Bennington School Board Mulls Bond Defeat and Next Steps

After Tuesday's defeat of the elementary school bond, Bennington school leaders debated a renewed campaign. Citizens' Committee co chair Robert Condon urged a real selling program and targeted fixes, while board members planned a follow up meeting and considered tax exemptions for seniors on fixed incomes. The panel will reconvene next Wednesday at 7 30 PM in the Bennington Elementary multi purpose room to size up a new campaign.

Bennington Villagers Circulate Petition For City Form

A group in Bennington Village circulates a petition asking trustees to add an article to the warning for this year’s Village Meeting. The goal is to authorize steps toward a city form of government embracing the village and nearby town areas that may join by vote. More than 200 signatures support the move.

Vermont Senate kills panther bill in lively session

Vermont's panther bill dies in Senate after House adoption aimed at making killings a big game offense. Rep. David Allen and Rep. George VanSantvoord pushed the measure through in the House amid laughter and debate. Senator Fiore Bove humorously described the animal as vicious, and the bill was dismissed after a brief reconsideration. The epitaph on display notes the last Vermont panther was shot in 1881 in Barnard.

Sportsmen push restoration of cuts to Fish and Game budget

Vermont sportsmen urged the House Appropriations Committee to restore a half million dollars cut from the Fish and Game Department budget for 1968 69. They warned the trimmed funds would hinder adding game biologists wardens and fish biologists. The committee showed limited receptiveness, with advocates Warren Shedd and Allen Brent stressing district plans and staffing needs.

Inactive Reservists Face Draft Reclassification

The Pentagon plans to call about 30,000 delinquent reservists to active duty and screen 75,000 others for possible reclassification. Estimated calls: Army 15,000 to 25,000. Air Force 3,500 to 4,000. Marine 2,000. Navy 100, with 55,000 Army Reservists, 8,000 Air Force, 12,000 Marine, and 900 Navy Reservists to be screened. McNamara says action extends the draft authority granted by Congress.

Moulton urges Manchester to join regional planning

Vermont Development Commissioner Elbert Moulton urged Manchester to approve formation of a Bennington County regional planning commission. Speaking to the Bennington County Soil and Conservation District, he warned growth could outpace Vermont's scenic and economic assets, urging local zoning and planning to preserve schools, jobs, and outdoor recreation.
