Dartmouth Scientist Links Pollution to Lung Development
Dartmouth College physiologist Dr. Donald Bartlett Jr. argues ozone from auto exhaust may retard alveolar development in children. He notes only 10 percent of alveoli are present at birth, with most forming by age seven to eight, and predicts polluted air could fix lung capacity for life. He plans rat studies with high oxygen to simulate ozone effects and warns fewer alveoli could trigger earlier lung disease, especially for smokers.
