A UPI report states a cordon of U S warships surrounds a mile offshore where the Aluminaut small submarine is believed to probe the seafloor for the missing nuclear bomb near Palomares Spain. The Alvin sub was not visible as a launch with orange suited crew waited about a mile out.
Winooski and Burlington fire units battled a general alarm blaze that swept three downtown buildings with no injuries reported. Amid the wider news, 800 airmen lived in a tent city after a B52 KC135 collision killed seven of 11 crew. President Johnson asked Congress for 55.8 million dollars for the National Teacher Corps rent supplement and to cover increased draft calls. The 1966 request includes 12.6 million for Selective Service.
Joseph A McDonough 53 a CVPSC sales representative and Bennington civic religious and business figure died suddenly at home from a heart attack. Born Rutland May 21 1912 he served in WWII after working in Rutland Windsor and Bennington then became a leading fundraiser and organizer for many local groups including the Lions Club BCHS Guild K of C and Democratic committees. Survives wife Charlotte, son Michael, siblings and other relatives. Funeral at Mahar and Son with burial in Calvary Rutland. Rosary Tuesday.
John Raymond Goodwin aged 29 is named managing editor of the Times-Reporter. He comes from the statehouse bureau in Montpelier and succeeds Tyler Resch. He previously edited the Bellows Falls Times and The Vermont Journal in Ludlow and will oversee a 10-member news staff in the Springfield office.

Two Soviet writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel were sentenced to five and seven years for anti Soviet agitation and propaganda. The supreme court refused to banish them after serving their terms. both men, 40, married and fathers, denied wrongdoing.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey maintains a rapid schedule touring Bangkok and Vientiane. He greets crowds, visits a Thai school, buys gifts for Everett Dirksen, tours temples and roads funded by American aid, and sails a Chaophya River flotilla while meeting Prime Minister Thanom and Premier Souvanna Phouma.
In the Central Highlands buses carrying rice farmers hit Viet Cong mines. At Tuy Hoa near Da Nang 47 farmers were dead and seven injured. A second mine killed 20 more as a crane lifted a bus from water. US and Allied forces reported 158 Communist troops killed in battles and pilots flew 338 combat sorties. A government operation near My Tho found 70 Viet Cong bodies, plus weapons and equipment.
At Lackland Air Force Base in Texas a meningitis outbreak prompted diversion of basic trainees to Amarillo AFB as a preventive measure. One airman, Jerry Slagle of Akron Ohio, died and six others are seriously ill. Other service deaths have occurred at Ft Gordon Fort Knox and Redstone Arsenal.

The Air Force and NASA lead a top priority probe into a ground test failure of the Agena rocket at Cape Kennedy. The mishap damaged the Agena engine, threatening the planned rendezvous and docking with Gemini 8. a backup craft may be used for the mission.
