Copter rescues boys in boat from icy Hudson River
Two Newburgh boys aged 11 and 12 were stranded for nearly two hours in a rickety rowboat on a Hudson River ice floe off Beacon. A Dutchess County sheriff’s helicopter lowered a rope ladder and retrieved them, bringing them to Highland Hospital for exposure treatment before they were sent home.

Laird Ends Fact-Finding Mission in Vietnam
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird wrapped up a three day fact finding mission to Vietnam for President Nixon. He said a significant enemy threat remains but U S troop withdrawals will continue. Castleton State College students entered a second day of a peaceful sit in at Woodruff Hall to protest the dismissal of seven faculty members. Carl Johnson of Quincy Mass said protesters would stay until Saturday noon for a vote on future action including a possible boycott. Thirty students remained through the night and were fed five gallons of goulash.

White Clause Revealed In Deed Given by Carswell
West Palm Beach Florida UPI Supremoe Court nominee Judge G Harrold Carswell and his wife sold a lot on Ocklockonee Bay in 1966 with a white occupancy restriction. The Palm Beach Post reports the deed exempted domestic employees and noted the sale to Mrs Harriet Yon and Mrs Mazie Middleton for about 4800 dollars on July 12 1966. The property was part of a 38 acre site acquired in a 1963 land swap and later subdivided for exclusive summer homes of the Simmons family and Tallahassee society. The covenant required ownership occupancy and use to be restricted to members of the Caucasian race.
