Davis backing funds keeps Vermont colleges on budget plan
The Vermont House Appropriations Committee backed Gov. Deane C. Davis's higher education budget, preserving $9.5 million in state funding for the University of Vermont, Vermont State Colleges, and the Vermont Student Assistance Corp. UVM officials warned of an $850,000 deficit if the funds were reduced. Rep. George Little urged a $300,000 increase. The panel also cut funds for the State planning office and earmarked $1 million for a proposed welfare income tax cut, and $400,000 for contractual services, prompting Democratic concerns about state employment. Senate leaders said they are reviewing the contractual services issue while the governor remains silent on the committee actions.
