Wallace silent as Justice Dept studies term legality
Gov. George C. Wallace offered no comment as Justice Department officials reviewed provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act to determine if his bid for a third term violates the law. A 1967 Alabama constitutional amendment allowing officials to succeed themselves is under review for possible federal approval. The department weighs whether the change affects minority voting rights and must be submitted for approval.
